What does καινός mean?
In Isaiah 43,19 we read, “Behold, I am doing a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it? I will make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert.” In the Septuagint, the Greek translation of the Old Testament, the root of the Greek word used to talk about something new is καινός (kainos). It refers to the concept of something being fresh, new, unused, or novel.
Green Lake chose to use that word to describe this project because we are creating opportunities for people explore, experience, and experiment with preaching. The project includes:
Summer immersion experiences for young adults to explore preaching through workshops, practical experience, and coaching.
Two retreats will be offered each year. The first will be focused on the Gen Z and Preaching while the second will function as a preaching lab where participants can experience and experiment with alternative approaches to preaching
What are we doing?
Each year, Green Lake Conference Center will hose three experiences for people to explore creativity in preaching.
Summer Immersion Experiences
Through our Quest and SALt programs, GLCC is providing immersive opportunities for young adults to experience preaching. Over the course of the 7-week program, participants participate in workshops to learn about the practices of leadership and preaching, explore various approaches to preaching, receive one-on-one coaching and mentoring, and preach. Each summer, we have nearly 40 different opportunities for participants to preach so every person has a chance to experience what it is like to proclaim the word of God. After each preaching experience, participants receive feedback from ministry leaders and peers.
Gatherings for Leaders
Each summer, we will host two retreats for people who are interested in creativity in preaching. To provide unique opportunities, we have created two different gatherings.
June 16 - 20, 2025 - Gen Z and Preaching (learn more)
Through interactive sessions facilitated by experts in generational theory and formational preaching, we will explore the connection between generational dynamics and preaching.August 11 - 15, 2025 - Creativity in Preaching Lab (learn more)
By creating space for pastors to safely explore alternative approaches to preaching, this gathering will create a unique opportunity to be exposed to new ideas and learn from other preachers. In addition, the team of facilitators will lead discussions on preaching and offer insights to emerging methods
